This reminds me a b&w photograph (a famous one I can’t seem to find now) of a street musician (playing a trumpet, I think). Another one that came to mind is of the blind woman by Strand (though not of a musician, it too captures a moment).

While this musician may not be lonesome (he’s probably part of a music band), this photo projects such an emotion, somber, may be sadness (but it’s too coarse a word), and I’m not thinking of the circumstances or the background of the person or the occasion, but mostly of a moment and the subject holding on to that moment.

These are the times I’m sorry that my vocabulary is not large enough to find the right words to describe this beautiful capture!

I grew up in a family that was very musical, learned the blues and everything like that. And I became a little bit frustrated with the simplicity of rock ‘n’ roll and blues. I started listening to a lot of classical music — mainly Bach, Vivaldi. Then one day on TV — I was about 12 or 13 years old — there was a Russian violinist (I can’t remember his name) that was playing solo violin: 24 Caprices for Solo Violin by Nicola Paganini. I completely freaked out, because I knew that’s what I was hearing in my head. I decided I was going to use all of the arpeggios and linear notes and wide vibrato of the violin. I’ve always been a little bit of an extremist, so I decided to go all of the way.

Together with my intrepid and excellent classmates, Janelle Proulx and Cynthia Henebry, we will be opening our first year MFA show at Black Iris Gallery here in Richmond, April 26th from 7-10pm next week.

The show will be open every Friday & Saturday from 11-5pm until May 18th, 2013. We hope to see you there.
